UV Protection for Hair: New Formulation

Our new formulation for UV protection would make the perfect product over the summer months. Throughout the summer UV protection is a priority. Everyone is familiar with protecting their skin from sun damage, but with evolved haircare on the rise, many recognise the importance of hair protection as well. With extra sun exposure during the summer, people are considering what they can add to their haircare routine to offer UV protection.

Haircare with UV Protection

To cater for defense against sun damage, we have studied the opportunities in oats, particularly our oat oil, Oat Lipid e. It has a unique, ingredient profile, rich in phospholipids, ceramides and tocotrienol and tocopherol (antioxidants) with multiple benefits, including UV protection for hair. Application of Oat Lipid e, prior to UV exposure helps to prevent ceramide loss. It replenishes ceramide levels through the different hair structures (shaft, cuticle, and cortex).

Our team at Oat Cosmetics is continually working to develop products which are innovative and are in line with the current industry trends. Our innovative formulations range is a classic example of the work we’ve been putting in, as a part of our research and development. To demonstrate how Oat Lipid e can be used in haircare products, we have developed a hair spray for UV protection. Oat Lipid e prevents hair ceramide degradation, helping to protect from the harmful effects of the sun, resulting in shiny, smooth hair.

Why Do You Need Sun Protection for Hair?

Prolonged exposure to the sun can have various damaging effects on the structure, composition, and appearance of the hair.

Oat Lipid e protects ceramide degradation from UV light. This results in restoring natural properties of the hair, while enhancing smoothness and shine. It also promotes elasticity and aids in strengthening the hair.

  • Effect on hair strength: UV light from the sun can strip the hair of its natural moisture, leading to dryness and brittleness.
  • Effect on hair structure: UV light can weaken the protein structure of the hair which gives hair its strength. This can result in hair that is more prone to breakage, split ends, and frizz.
  • Effect on hair appearance: Sun-damaged hair appears dull and lacks the natural shine and lustre. With the breakage and dryness, the hair often looks visibly damaged and less healthy.

Damage to the Hair Structure

Pollution of UV light is one of the most damaging influences on hair. Excessive sun exposure is one of the most common causes of impairment of the hair shaft’s structure. This includes the degradation of ceramides, which are lipids that naturally occur in the hair strand. Ceramides’ main purpose is to act like a glue that helps the cuticle layer lay flat and intact. With a healthy ceramide count, the tightly packed cuticle layer maintains strength, elasticity, and shine. When there is a reduction in ceramide levels, the hair becomes vulnerable to unwanted damage, resulting in dry, brittle hair.

Oat Oil for UV Protection

Oat Lipid e, our oat oil ingredient featuring in our new formulation, protects ceramide degradation from UV light. Protecting ceramides from damaged hair can improve the binding of the scales of the cuticle, restoring the natural properties of the hair. Keeping the hair cuticle flat, ceramides strengthen the hair, with a smooth, shiny appearance.

As the haircare market continues to expand, protective beauty is an important focus. Evolving from just hygiene and styling to treatments and protection being key parts of haircare routines, customers are more educated than ever on what products offer results.

Blended with other product functions, there is an opportunity for Oat Lipid e to advance formulations. For example, a serum, hairspray or anti-frizz mist with the support of UV protection. Oat Lipid e ticks all the boxes in the multi-benefits the unique ingredient profile offers, positioning it as the ideal raw ingredient for haircare products.
