Ceramides are lipid molecules which play an essential role in maintaining the integrity of the stratum corneum, contributing to the skin barrier function and preventing moisture loss. They account for almost 40-50% of the lipids in the stratum corneum. The skin ceramide levels decrease as we age, leading to the skin barrier imbalance, resulting in dry, rough and dull skin.
