UK based Oat Cosmetics have released the long term clinical trial results for their most popular ingredient, Oat COM (Colloidal Oatmeal) assessing its efficacy on subjects with dry skin. The trial revealed that an inclusion of 3% Oat COM extruded colloidal oatmeal added to a passive base provided a visible improvement to dry and irritated skin.

Over the 90 day trial 98% of subjects suffering with dry skin felt that the product consistently left their skin feeling moisturised and nourished, 91% felt it created a feeling that the skin was silky soft and 89% agreed that it soothed the skin.

Ed Galley of Ed Galleys Associates commented “The key result and one that in our opinion was very challenging across individuals with dry skin, was on-going and consistent moisturisation. We were delighted to see subjects instantly recognise the moisturising effects and equally that the effect was sustained across the entire 3 month period. When subjects with dry skin conditions test moisturisers, we often expect to see good short-term observations, however long-term and sustained moisturising effects are rare. Dry skin conditions are often accompanied with related issues such as redness or flaking. Therefore the highly perceived soothing effects were also very encouraging indeed. In all, we believe the results show this Oat COM based moisturiser was perfect for alleviating the symptoms of dry skin conditions.

Hydration of the skin is one of the most important agents involved in alleviating dry and irritated skin conditions. Colloidal Oatmeal demonstrates effective and fast-acting moisturising properties due the lipid, beta-glucan, protein complex contained within the oat. This creates a protective and humectant barrier on the skin.  Oat Cosmetics’ extruded colloidal oatmeal is manufactured using a unique patented process which enhances the bioavailability of these phytoactives, making it powerful ingredient for the moisturisation of dry skin.

The trial also assessed the interesting textural benefits of this ingredient, with results showing an astounding 100% of the subjects agreed that on initial application the product left their skin feeling soft after use and was non-greasy.  88% noted it absorbed into the skin very easily and 94% stated that the product left no tacky after feel and glided easily on the skin.

An independent consumer research facility conducted a single placement study over 90 days, using a market-relevant facial cream to be used once per day with a 3% inclusion of Oat COM.  17 female subjects were trialled all over the age of 40 years old.  Subjects were asked a number of questions at the initial assessment and on Day 30, 60, and 90.
